Assignment: The goal of this assignment is for you to reflect on the subject matter covered in the second exam. Given that the exam was multiple-choice format, this assignment gives you an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in written form. This will be your last extra credit assignment for the semester. Please respond to the following essay:

It is often said that people do not participate in politics because they can’t, don’t want to, or nobody asked. Please write an essay explaining how these factors play into explaining why many people don’t vote, but alternatively why some groups of people vote at high rates, whereas other vote at such low rates. Finally, explain the different tactics candidates can use to mobilize voters and whether/how they are effective.

Value: Students that meet requirements will have up to an additional 20 points added to Exam 2.

Style and requirements: 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced, citations are not required, but if used, must be properly cited using APA format.

Grading Rubric:

10 points- explain voting and participation from the perspective of can’t, don’t want to, and nobody asked *3 point deduction for excluding any of these

5 points- discuss the demographics of who participates in politics and who does not

5 points- discuss the tactics candidates can use to mobilize voters and whether and how they are effective.
