Length: 4-5 pages MLA style
In this essay, you will analyze, critique, discuss, investigate some larger system of meaning or understanding using Nietzsche’s ideas. First, you’ll need to identify what could be categorized as a grand narrative – science, religion, philosophy, etc. You’ll describe this way of understanding the world and how it produces meaning or knowledge. This can be a pre-existing, defined way of knowing the world (Buddhism, for example) or something less established (materialism as a guiding principle in many people’s lives, for example). The amount of description required will be related to how established and well known this narrative is. It can be a narrative to which you subscribe, with which you disagree, or one about which you have neutral feelings. Second, you’ll apply concepts from the Nietzsche essay to make some sort of argument. You can use those ideas as a means of support, as counterpoints or foils, as a means of defining terms, or simply as points of comparison. You’ll need to quote (thoughtfully, succinctly) from the essay directly. Your argument can be about the specific narrative you’re interrogating or about how we make meaning (generally speaking). Avoid generalizations. Religion, yes, is a grand narrative, but it’s difficult to write about Religion! generally in a way that’s actually meaningful. It would be more effective (and interesting) if you spoke about, say Catholicism in contemporary New England society. Also, push yourself to write about a narrative that isn’t so familiar. The DIY movement, for example, has a narrative – a way of thinking about and understanding the world – that is unique to its proponents. So does CrossFit. So do vegans. Remember, when we say critiquing, that doesn’t necessarily mean criticizing. I’m interested in reading a thoughtful discussion of how knowledge is produced and understood, as rooted in a particular point of view. This is an academic paper so your tone needs to be formal (no “you” and avoid “I” if it’s hard for you to use it and stay formal). You’ll use MLA formatting and citation style (as usual). You will need an introduction with a clearly stated thesis, well-organized supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. You’ll also need an interesting and descriptive title.
The site should only from Nietzsche’s article.
